The Lamborghini Terzo Millennio (Italian for the Third Millennium) is a futuristic electric concept car introduced by Italian automobile manufacturer Lamborghini and developed in collaboration with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). It is the first product of a three-year, £100,000,000 partnership with among the two institutions. The Terzo Millennio was unveiled in November 2017 at the EmTech conference in Cambridge, Massachusetts, United States.

Today it is part of Volkswagen AG, and its cars start at around $200,000. There is neither price guidance nor a timeline on the Terzo Millennio; a production model won’t be available for years, if ever.

The Lamborghini Terzo Millennio requires 60 blueprints to be unlocked and an additional 140 blueprints for Star Upgrades; a total of 200 blueprints. Blueprints were only obtainable through its special event. Upgrades require 27,726,000 while Import Parts require 14,760,000.
The sports car of the future uses electricity instead of gasoline. Electric systems generate high efficiency and offer several interesting characteristics like the possibility to recover kinetic energy and to deliver huge peaks of power. In order to make the most from the opportunities offered by electrification, the accumulation system must be power-oriented and symmetrical, to allow high performances and the greatest energy recovery possible. To harvest this opportunity, today’s batteries are not enough and a big leap forward is needed: Lamborghini’s aim is to develop an innovative supercapacitor able to close the gap with conventional batteries in terms of energy density, preserving an outstanding power density.
Lamborghini aims to reduce weight and to increase the availability of electric energy using structural electric energy storing composites as a rechargeable battery. The target is to improve the nanomaterial technology, diffusing nano-charges in CFK-based panels able to store electric energy and in the meantime to form the body and structures of the car. At the same time, the project aims to combine the technology to monitor continuously the whole carbon fiber structure, both visible and invisible, with the concept of health-monitoring: the goal is to provide for the Terzo Millennio the ability to conduct its own health-monitoring, to detect cracks and damages that might occur after an accident, throughout its substructure, while limiting or reducing to zero the risks correlated to the presence and propagation of cracks in the carbon fiber structure.

Lamborghini plans to reveal its anticipated LB48H Terzo millennio concept at the 2019 frankfurt motor show. the model is its first hybrid supercar and will feature an electric motor with the brand’s familiar 6.5-liter V12 engine at the rear axle. rumors indicate the model has a combined output of 838 horsepower (625 kilowatts) and is rumored to be priced at $2.5 million US. While the Lamborghini Terzo Millennio has quick acceleration and excellent drift radius, it has an inferior top speed compared to the W Motors Fenyr SuperSport, Koenigsegg Regera, and Bugatti Chiron, with a below-average nitro duration and subpar handling. Overall, it is an average performer that doesn’t excel at anything.

Lamborghini revealed the new design concept in collaboration with two laboratories at the Massachusetts institute of technology (MIT) in 2017, pushing forward the future of electric supersport cars. the concept focuses on different dimensions of technology and design, including energy storage systems, innovative materials, and propulsion systems. in a time when the high-end automobile industry is moving away from traditional energy storage systems and conventional batteries, lamborghini is investigating the potential of supercapacitors.
five years ago, lamborghini applied low voltage supercapacitors in the popular V12 aventador. the potential for this storage system needs to be able to deliver high peak power and regenerate kinetic energy with a limited influence from aging and cycling during the vehicle’s life. at the same time, the system must be able to symmetrically release and harvest electric power. this system requires the utilization of new materials and produce carbon fiber structure and parts — taking lightweight materials to the next level.
the terzo millennio aims to combine technology and ‘self-healing,’ the car’s ability to conduct its own health monitoring to detect cracks and damages. this is conducted through micro-channels filled with healing chemistries. the energy storage system directly relates to performance. it allows the terzo millennio to embody the Lamborghini spirit while taking steps towards the direction of creating ‘lamborghini electric’ — focusing on high torque, reversibility, and the possibility of moving energy by wire. the overall design utilizes entirely new architecture to perfect airflow.
Lamborghini Terzo Millennio Interior
The Terzo Millennio uses high-capacity supercapacitors in lieu of batteries, due to their more rapid storage and discharge of energy. These supercapacitors have been made to simultaneously capture and release energy to give the car an increase in high performance, without having the depend on chemical reactions.
Each wheel, the rims of which glow orange, contains an electric motor, so that the amount of torque can be controlled individually, making the car’s stability as good as a modern Formula One car. Because there is a motor on every rim, the car would be all-wheel-drive if it were a running model.
The Terzo Millennio is reported to have an autonomous system, but only for racetrack driving. This system would make the car run a full lap without any mistakes, then teach the driver how to run the lap on their own, using a ghost car, which is based on various racing video game franchises.
The car still inherits the modern Lamborghini design, with the Y-shaped headlights and taillights, and the triangular front trunk and rear engine bay.
Carbon fiber composite is used entirely for the body panels, containing nano-tubes that can repair itself if the factory-fitted sensors detect any small cracks and dents in the panels. The body of the car is monitored by a health system. The Terzo Millennio was preceded by the Sian FKP 37, introduced two years later at the 2019 IAA Frankfurt Motor Show, and some of the design elements were integrated into the Sian FKP 37.
